Indian youth cricket has entered an exciting new phase as Vaibhav Suryavanshi, just 14 years old, has been appointed captain of the Indian Under-19 team for the upcoming tour of South Africa. The decision, announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), has created widespread discussion across the cricketing world due to Suryavanshi’s remarkably young age and rapid rise through the ranks.
The South Africa tour will feature a three-match One Day International (ODI) series beginning on January 3, and Vaibhav Suryavanshi will lead the side during this assignment. However, despite captaining the team on tour, he will not lead India at the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, which begins later in January.
Different Captains for Tour and World Cup
BCCI has clarified the reason behind appointing two different captains in its official press release. India’s regular U-19 captain Ayush Mhatre and vice-captain Vihan Malhotra are currently recovering from injuries. Both players have been ruled out of the South Africa tour and will report to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence for rehabilitation.
Once medically cleared, Ayush Mhatre and Vihan Malhotra will rejoin the squad for the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup, scheduled to start on January 15. As a result, the BCCI handed the captaincy responsibility to Vaibhav Suryavanshi for the South Africa tour, making him one of the youngest captains in Indian age-group cricket history.
For the World Cup, Ayush Mhatre will resume leadership duties, with Vihan Malhotra serving as vice-captain.
India’s U-19 World Cup Campaign Schedule
India will kick off its U-19 World Cup journey on January 15 with a match against USA. The second group match is scheduled against Bangladesh on January 17, followed by a clash with New Zealand on January 24.
These fixtures are part of the group stage, after which teams will advance to the Super Six stage, followed by the semi-finals and the final. The championship match of the tournament will be played in Harare.
Four Gujarat Players Selected for U-19 World Cup
One of the standout aspects of the World Cup squad announcement is the strong representation from Gujarat. Out of the 15 players selected for the tournament, four cricketers are from Gujarat:
- Vedant Trivedi
- Khiln Patel
- Henil Patel
- Harvansh Singh
Vedant Trivedi, Khiln Patel, and Henil Patel represent the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), while Harvansh Singh plays for the Saurashtra Cricket Association. Their selection highlights the growing influence of Gujarat in India’s domestic and age-group cricket structure.
Additionally, Yuvraj Gohil, another promising player from Saurashtra, has been included in the South Africa tour squad but did not make the final 15 for the World Cup.

ICC U-19 World Cup Format and India’s Group
The ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup will feature 16 teams, divided into four groups. Following the group stage, teams will progress to the Super Six round, then the semi-finals and final.
India, a five-time U-19 World Cup champion (2000, 2008, 2012, 2018, and 2022), has been placed in Group B, alongside New Zealand, USA, and Bangladesh. Given India’s strong history in the tournament, expectations are once again high for the defending champions.

Spotlight on Vaibhav Suryavanshi
The appointment of Vaibhav Suryavanshi as captain at just 14 years of age underlines the BCCI’s confidence in his leadership abilities and cricketing maturity. While he will not captain the side during the World Cup, leading India on an overseas tour against South Africa will provide invaluable experience and exposure at an early stage of his career.
As Indian cricket continues to invest in youth development, the rise of players like Vaibhav Suryavanshi and the strong presence of Gujarat cricketers in the national setup signal a promising future for the country’s next generation of stars.
